Madrid Research Workshop

The Center for Iberian Studies, in partnership with the Center for Spain in America (CSA), is pleased to annouce the 2026 Madrid Research Workshop in Archives, Libraries, and Art Collections on June 22-26, 2026 in Madrid, Spain.

This intensive and hands-on one-week course is designed for graduate students, independent researchers, and early-career professionals interested in gaining skills to successfully navigate key repositories and methodologies in medieval and early modern Iberian studies.

Course Overview

Students study a manuscript in the SLU Madrid library archives.
 

The one-week program will introduce participants to archives, libraries and art collections in and around Madrid. Participants will also embard on field trips to additional archives, libraries, museums, and UNESCO World Heritage sites in Toledo and El Escorial. In addition to gaining skills on navigating the region's rich resources, participants will engage in discussions with experts on research methodologies, thematic explorations, and paleographic and diplomatic strategies for handling a diverse range of primary sources. This is a unique opportunity for graduate students and early-career scholars to develop critical research skills while expanding their professional and academic networks.

The workshop is organized into three main components:

  • Conversation-based and practical research seminars with pre-readings.
  • On-site visits and hands-on study sessions with targeted primary source collections.
  • CIHS Annual Lecture and plenary reception and dinner.

Costs

The course fee is $800. The Center for Iberian Historical Studies/CSA Madrid Research Workshop offer limited financial support on a competitive basis. There are two subvention opportunities for U.S. citizens and permanent residents: $2,500 stipend plus course fee waiver or a course fee waiver only. The stipend will be paid upon completion of the course.

Applicants must demonstrate an advanced level of Spanish language proficiency in their applications. Pre-selected candidates will be required to complete a 15-minute online interview in Spanish.
